Book Review

This week’s book review is Billy and Me, by Giovanna Fletcher.

Summery In My Own Words

Sophie lives in a quiet town, keeps to herself and surrounds herself with tea and cake. She spends her days working with her best friend Molly. Little did she know what would happen with the famous actor Billy Buskin walked through the door at Tea-on-the-hill.

Her life seems to do a complete 180, she decides that she needs to live for herself instead for everyone around her. However, Sophie’s struggle with anxiety and keeping a secret, has pushed away any friendships and the possibility of a life outside Rosefont Hill. But Billy Buskin definitely changes that!

My Review

Billy and Me is Giovanna’s debut novel which was published in 2013. I have to be completely honest, I LOVED this book!! It has definitely been thee most heart-warming and entertaining book that I have read in a long time. From page one, the character spring to life. They become familiar to you, you began to see them as friends. It also is such an easy read, you become enthralled from page one, there’s no dilly-dallying, it catches you straight away.

Billy and Me is a lot of things, it’s romantic, it’s uplifting, and it’s witty. It is everything you want wrapped up in one book that you can easily relate to.

I did find myself comparing myself with Sophie a lot through out the book. She is such a realistic character that you can relate to in many ways. She is a strong female lead character who has to battle through a lot of tough situations to find out where she belongs and to find out what she is meant to do!

The book highlighted a lot of issues for me. It brings mental health to light. Sophie suffers from Anxiety, and her Mum suffers from Depression. It really emphasises that it’s okay to not be okay. That is can be a normal development for people who have gone through a lot of shit in a short period of time! I like that aspect of the book, Giovanna doesn’t just gloss past it, she goes into a lot of detail regarding their recovery. It also highlights that it is very important to have good friendships in your life! The bond that Sophie and Molly has is like no other, they are best friends. They share everything with each other, they trust each other and more importantly throughout the story, you can see they have unconditional love for each other. It is so uplifting reading their interaction with each other. You really can’t help but laugh with them!

Sophie and Billy’s relationship is so heart warming. I found throughout the book, that I would just smile to myself at their relationship, when Billy would do something romantic, or when Sophie embarrasses herself in front of him. They both seem to have such big hearts and from the beginning, I believed they belonged together.

It’s a warm, whimsical and witty story, Giovanna certainly puts Sophie and Billy in real life situations. It’s not all fairy tales and roses. They couple go through their spats, the big fights, the jealously and the paranoia that any couple would experience in that situation. They struggle with each other and I believe this makes the book even more relatable for people. Not only that, as you get into the story, Sophie’s story becomes clearer and explains what she has been through. I sobbed through most of those parts. Giovanna’s writing makes you believe that you are with Sophie, going through it with her and your heart really does ache for her! Be prepared for those parts.

Billy and Me has been very memorable for me. It undoubtedly had made it into my top 10 list. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone! It would not be a waste of your time to pick up Billy and Me up and immerse yourself into Sophie May’s life and experience the wonderful ups and the terrible heart wrenching downs (I would really recommend that you have tissues on stand by for those).

Let me know if you have read it and what you thought!! Also leave any recommendations if you have any!!
